108 Miles

Journey into the Mind

Anger. Jealousy. Confusion. Pride. Attachment.

Kickstarter, Indiegogo demo

Anger. Jealousy. Confusion. And the rest… We all know them. They poison us all. But is there a way out from their grip? Can we experience lasting joy? 108 Miles will seek answers to these questions through a magical journey of Prince Siddhartha; all in a revolutionary new eBook format with 360° cinematic illustrations. As the story goes, Siddhartha’s father – a powerful king – never let his son leave the grounds of the Royal Palace. When the boy was born, an old withered fortune-teller with a wheeze to her voice had predicted that Siddhartha would either become a powerful ruler or an enlightened spiritual guide. Such guides were respected in society, but thrones were not their place and kingdoms not much of their concern.

Desiring against the latter option, the King had resolved there and then to prevent his son from seeing the imperfections of the world. His reasoning was simple to him; if Siddhartha saw how the world can be then he might feel led to choose the spiritual path. Held away in the Palace, he could instead be instructed in the ways of kings without distraction.
So it followed that Siddhartha’s life was rather fabulous. But it also followed, before too long, that this life became an unbearable prison. As the years went by, the young prince grew thirsty for freedom. He desired to discover more about his world. His daydreaming grew in on itself. He imagined splendid princesses and princes; horses fine and athletic like his own; new kinds of people and plant life. Once those options were exhausted, he moved on to imagining even stranger things. New kinds of being – ones that floated in the sky without wings. Trees with leaves the colour of purple gowns, and so on.
One bright summer’s day, when Siddhartha’s curiosity had possessed him completely, he came to a final decision: no matter what his father’s order was, he must go and see the world for himself. Whatever the king would say, he would free himself from the prison palace. His life had become no way for a prince to carry on, he was sure, and so his actions were justified and logical. His determination was so strong and clear that his father couldn’t stop him any more. The King would simply give in to the wish of his most beloved son. So it happened that, with a little ingenuity and a newly-discovered trick with blankets made into ropes, the Prince was finally out. And so was the secret.
The King, however, did everything in his power to hide the imperfections of his kingdom for as long as possible (and forever if he could). He ordered the beggars and sick to hide in their shelters, made streets resemble spectacular palace corridors, had dead trees lopped and starving elephants tidied away.
But, of course, such an escalation of the carry on could not continue for long. While Siddhartha was travelling around on his golden throne, he spotted a beautiful widow sitting next to a pyre for the dead. She was silently sobbing with as much decorum as she could muster whilst sat by the giant river that crossed the Indian lands. Only the gentle fire crackling its ghostly feed broke the river’s silence.
Siddhartha was immediately touched by her sadness. But he didn’t fully understand what he was looking at. He had never seen a person dead; neither had he ever really experienced sadness, loss, or funeral pyres. He ordered his servants to stop, and with a huge jump, he landed his feet a few steps from the weeping widow. Gently he asked her, “Excuse me, madam. Why do you cry?”

Journey into the Mind

Anger. Jealousy. Confusion. Pride. Attachment.

Indiegogo / Kickstarter demo

War came upon the entire kingdom after the king had died. Faraway invaders flooded the lands from all directions to seize what power they could. Everyone wanted the throne, and everyone wanted revenge on the king’s family. They attacked the royal city at night, while its people were at sleep. No house was spared; the frenetic crowd set every corner of the city on fire. Women and children were screaming whilst trying to hide.
The old man with the goatee beard and his good lady with the newborn baby were lucky; they found safety in a small building. It was on an island in the middle of the giant river. Looking at the fighting from this safe distance, there was something theatrical about the fight.

In a dark corridor of the busy backstage of the theatre – somewhere between two infinite mirror-worlds – the actor slowly unwraps his mask, dusts it off and carefully puts it on. He tilts his head a bit right and then left to adjust his newly-acquired persona. And then everything is muted. He is on stage. He is at war. But is this stage and long-awaited play a paradise or hell for the actor?
The burning night sky served as a well-crafted, almost artistic, backdrop for this theater of the absurd. The people, also like the actors within a play, went through a collective metamorphosis as they put on those long-forgotten masks of anger. The stage was burning, and the people were at war; they were the war itself.
Probably due to the distance and safety that the river building offered, the old man managed to stay calm. He couldn’t do much anyway, and he had seen wars before. Whilst smoking his pipe and standing in the middle of the dark river, he was pondering over this collective shift: how is it possible that a seemingly calm nation can suddenly turn into rage, burning everything down? How can a royal city resembling a paradise the likes of which few had known suddenly turn into a living hell?
He recalled an old fable. It told the story of a curious young soldier who was seeking out the real paradise; real hell. He crossed continents to find what he believed must have truly existed somewhere. He heard so many stories about these two places, but they were nowhere to be found. To his luck, he met a wayfarer who suggested he visit an old yogi in the remote Himalayas. He promised the soldier that the yogi would help him find whatever it was he was looking for. After a long, tiring trip, he eventually found him.
‘Master, I have been seeking for Paradise and Hell for many years. When I was a child, I was told they exist, but I can find them nowhere!’
‘Slow down kid, slow down… I don’t even know who you are…’
‘I am a warrior. I served in the best legions and I have even been selected as a personal guard to the King!’
‘Hahh.. You a soldier? A warrior? The king’s personal guard?’, exclaimed the old yogi. ‘What kind of king would let you serve him? Your face looks like that of a beggar; ugly and dirty. Your body is weak and stinks. You are nothing.’
The soldier became so angry that he began to draw his sword, but the master continued. ‘So you have a sword! Your weapon is rusty and much too dull to cut off my head. Get out of my way.’
The soldier became even more upset and he was ready to strike. How dare the old yogi imply that he was impotent; powerless.
The yogi just looked at him; a curve of a smile played on his lips. ‘Here open the gates of hell; the entrance that you have been looking for all these years. But at least you found it kid…’ the master remarked.
The young soldier was shaken by the realization. He suddenly understood it all. All these years of search were pointless. All this time searching, and hell was what happened in ones’ mind. He silently put down his sword and smiled.
‘Ah! And there is the other. Your smile and realization now are the entrance to paradise’, said the yogi. ‘Congratulations. You found them both.’

360° steampunk journey

When Passepartout reached the second floor he recognised at once the room which he was to inhabit, and he was well satisfied with it. Electric bells and speaking-tubes afforded communication with the lower stories; while on the mantel stood an electric clock, precisely like that in Mr. Fogg’s bedchamber, both beating the same second at the same instant. “That’s good, that’ll do,” said Passepartout to himself. He suddenly observed, hung over the clock, a card which, upon inspection, proved to be a programme of the daily routine of the house. It comprised all that was required of the servant, from eight in the morning, exactly at which hour Phileas Fogg rose, till half-past eleven, when he left the house for the Reform Club.

all the details of service, the tea and toast at twenty-three minutes past eight, the shaving-water at thirty-seven minutes past nine, and the toilet at twenty minutes before ten. Everything was regulated and foreseen that was to be done from half-past eleven a.m. till midnight, the hour at which the methodical gentleman retired. Mr. Fogg’s wardrobe was amply supplied and in the best taste. Each pair of trousers, coat, and vest bore a number, indicating the time of year and season at which they were in turn to be laid out for wearing; and the same system was applied to the master’s shoes. In short, the house in Saville Row, which must have been a very temple of disorder and unrest under the illustrious but dissipated Sheridan, was cosiness, comfort, and method idealised.

Alice in Venice

A new Wonderland. Underwater

Let’s carry on with a popular tale…

Demo for Kickstarter/ Indiegogo

The drama played out (as drama always does) and much like the record it came to a natural end. With that done, and looking up, Alice could finally take a better look at the place. It was a little dusty. At the back of the back yard (or was it the top of the upper?) she observed that there was a door. By now in her life, Alice was getting wise to doors.
“The shop is open!” The voice came from a woman with the ears of a cow. Let’s be honest, she had the face of a cow to match. “Don’t be shy my lady. Just go in.”
It was certainly an ordeal to get in to this place; what with the help of the hot-air balloon, magically appearing ladders coming from out of the sky,

and a woman with cow features ushering her through the door. On top of that, and now that she was here, it looked like the shop was located in a completely isolated Venetian street; a street with no visible entrance left or right. Alice was now confused. Was it the only shop in the area? Or were there others like it?
“You’ll be thinking it a peculiar place for a shop”, said the cow-woman shopkeeper. “But I have it all planned out, you see. With a place so difficult to access, I’ve got no competition!” The shopkeeper’s eyes lit up with a smile. “I can do anything I want. Nobody can pilfer my ideas, undersell my wares or change my supply lines on a whim.”
“You’ll also be having no customers.” Alice was at pains to point out.
“That matters less to me,” said the cow-woman, “than whether you’re a pilferer. Are you a pilferer?” She looked Alice up and down with a big eye. Her breath smelt of dung and she had grass up her nose.
Moving politely away, Alice walked further inside. Instantly flooding in came distant memories from her past.
“I’ve been here before, but yet I know I’ve never been…”
She didn’t have long to reflect. A small dragon – kept on a chain as a pet and hanging from the ceiling – reached out at her. Luckily the chain thwarted these attempts because the combination of Alice’s long hair with sharp dragon nails was likely to be a challenge for them both. On the surface, the lashing of the snappy little blighter appeared rude; perhaps dangerous. But on speculating about dragon etiquette Alice reasoned that this was perhaps a customary welcome from the beast. It wasn’t the dragon’s fault that it had claws, was chained up or wanted to say hello. She tried to reach out in return.
Other things about the ceiling became apparent as she stretched. A dog sniffing around. Teacups sailing past. She was beginning to feel more at home.

Let’s carry on with a popular tale…

She stepped through the shop’s tiny back door and immediately found herself floating in a peculiar underwater world. Alice looked around and noticed that everything somehow resembled to the city above: there were Venetian buildings and silent gondolas crossing the underwater canals. In the distance, there were children playing on the plaza. But then Alice noticed some jellyfish passing above her. They were glowing as they elegantly glided through the sky of this underwater city.
“What happened, did we just sink?” – Alice asked herself loudly.
Much to her surprise, she could hear her own words. She could also breath bubbles in-and-out without any problem.

“Oh, that’s good, it means I can stay here a bit longer.”
Feeling no urge to return, she let the water currents move her body smoothly.
The slow movement of the water reminded her the balloon ride, except that the wind appeared to be more random, while the underwater currents seemed to follow the rhythm of a fine music.
“I have never danced under the water. Also, I can walk if I want, and I can swim like a mermaid if I wish to do so.” – Alice noted and she decided to follow with the rhythm.

Alice in Venice

A new Wonderland. Underwater

Let’s carry on with a popular tale…

Demo for Kickstarter/ Indiegogo

…The last canal of Venice was not marked on any known map. It was a dead-end street, but to be honest it had no visible entrance from any direction. Many locals even questioned its very existence. But this didn’t really matter to Alice. She just enjoyed the hot air ballon flight. She really liked it when the wind was gently rocking them; it made her giggle each time.
“Here we are!”, said the balloonist as they approached the yard.
The yard looked rather chaotic from the air. There was an abandoned, rusty rail track running across the grounds. (So maybe, this was the lost railway station that people had rumoured of?) The place was rather awkward for many other reasons as well.

For example, a gate blocked the rail track’s way. Clearly there was no way in or out for any train. But the builders came up with an ingenious solution. They continued the rail-track’s path vertically, all around the gate. The vertical bit looked more like a ladder leaning against this gate, but nobody really questioned the solution.
And just to make the chaos even bigger, we must mention that there was a dwarf (camouflaged as a clown) making soap bubbles. He was trying to entertain a lonely horse with his game. But why anyone would think that a horse would be interested in soap bubbles remains a question for now. (Surely “fly-me a carrot” would be a better choice for lonely horse entertainment?)
-“Oh how do I get down there from the balloon?”, Alice wondered.
To her surprise a bunch of ladders appeared from the skies allowing Alice to safely descend to the yard.
– “Great! I am going in now”. And with a few hops, she entered the chaos.
(It is worth noting that Alice is always very considerate with others; she always lets everyone else go first. For this very reason, she kindly let her shadow take the lead. How polite! Wouldn’t it be wonderful for the world if everyone followed this habit? No shadows would remain unseen. But let’s get back to the story.)
As Alice and her shadow arrived an exciting scene emerged. The dwarf (still camouflaged as a clown) suddenly flared up, probably due to the fact that the lonely horse wasn’t paying attention to his bubbles. (We must therefore assume that the horse got very intrigued by the unexpected guests appearing from the skies.) To demonstrate how unhappy he was with the situation, the dwarf jumped up from his little stool and threw a couple of stones at Alice. And while this dramatic scene was unfolding, the gramophone decided to play some happy tunes to tone down the unpleasantness of its surroundings.

Chapter 3

Murka the Ghost

…Another week passed and Murka the Ghost still didn’t seem to understand why her presence in the village made little difference, to say the least. She was floating around the old streets as effective ghosts do but people largely ignored her. This was really upsetting. How could the locals be so arrogant? Perhaps she wasn’t liked? Perhaps she looked too bad? Unfortunately for Murka, that was hardly the reason. She was pretty and young. But unlike some ghosts, she was invisible.
“So I must smell bad”, Murka thought.
To test her theory, she took a bath in the nearby lake hoping that people would start noticing her. Luckily the lake wasn’t far; three miles there, and one mile to get back. (Some conjectured that the road was shorter downhill, others just ignored the discrepancy; and we’ll skip past whether ghosts can bathe for now.)

After the bath, Murka was ready to test how people would react to her presence. This time she visited Robert, the local shoemaker in his rather odd cottage. He was a handsome man, and Murka had a crush. Robert was sitting in the dusty garden; a giant ladder leaning against the roof of his cottage. He was repairing some nasty smelling old shoes. He liked smelly shoes and it was one of those calm afternoons when the beautiful sunlight silences the world. To impress Robert, Murka prepared tea, and some toast. She was exited, yet a bit shy.
“What if he notices me this time?”, Murka thought.
“Is he going to like me? Is he going to take me for a walk?”
But much to Murka’s upset, Robert didn’t pay any attention to her or to the 5 o’clock tea. “He’s with his work.” A logical conclusion for Murka to have. But there was something else. Or better to say somebody else.
Then Murka spotted the woman. The woman was Jana (a dancer from the local cabaret), who appeared to Murka as if coming out of nowhere. How rude for a living person. More rude; because she was a flesh and blood dancer. And on top of that she was flirting.

Why is it so difficult to achieve lasting happiness?

Is it possible at all? We work so hard in life to achieve things to be happy: we work for our relationships, for our carrier, for a comfortable life. We work hard for everything. Yet, when it comes to achieving happiness, something always comes up and the so-called happiness slips through our fingers: we get the wrong boss who makes us always angry. Our partner leaves us for another person. The new “big” client is the single most annoying person in the galaxy. No problem, “next time” things will be better. We’ll be happier “then”. At least that’s what we think. But “next time” something comes up again, and we need to start all over again. Where is even the possibility of any lasting happiness in all this constant fight?

But when it comes to lasting joy, the question is: do we actually search for it at the right place? Is it something that we will ever find in a world that is based on constantly changing conditions? Or, is it true what a yogi once said: “We just have to remind ourselves that the source for any happiness is the mind itself”
